Almapottery
Lavinia Hanachiuc
Ann arbor mi
Lavinia Hanachiuc (Brasov, Romania) is a ceramicist, printmaker, and mixed media installation artist. Raised under a brutal dictatorship while experiencing severe censorship she practiced art making as a subversive act of rebellion, escapism, and freedom. By contesting the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Hanachiuc absorbs the tradition of remembrance art into daily practice , creating as a result duplicitous and multilayered imagery . This personal follow-up and revival of a past tradition is important as an act of meditation especially in the repetitive practice of printmaking and ceramics. Her large scale figurative work is inspired by multiple characters from world lore which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. By focusing on multiple techniques and materials, her work is executed in a cycle of construction/destruction by alternating clear formal rules with extreme experimental practices. After immigrating to the US, the artist focused on participatory community projects that are fleeting, transitory, and explorative in nature. They align with the concept of active citizenship through civic engagement, which is a constant in Hanachiuc’s life as a form of resistance and empowerment. Hanachiuc has exhibited locally and internationally and resides currently in Ann Arbor, Michigan. -
